The press conference announcing the awards was held Tuesday, November 13, 2007, in the lobby of the Louis L. Redding City County Building.
The ten (10) designated schools will receive up to $100,000 each to assist or start an after school tutoring program for City of Wilmington youth. The program will target students who are performing below grade level in reading, math and writing in 2nd through 5th grades. The goal of the program is to help students meet the standard of achieving a level 3 on the DSTP in reading, math and writing.
The schools receiving grants are: Christina School District - Elbert Palmer, Pulaski and Stubbs Elementary Schools; Red Clay Consolidated School District - Warner, Highlands, Shortlidge and Lewis Elementary Schools; Brandywine School District - Harlan and P.S. duPont Elementary Schools; Charter School - Kuumba Academy.
At a November 8, 2007 press conference, City Council awared nine (9) community centers a $10,000 grant (totaling $90,000) for Extended Hours/Enrichment programs. The nine community centers were: Hilltop Lutheran Neighhorhood Center, Neighborhood House, Our Youth Inc., H. Fletcher Brown Boys & Girls Club, Clarence Fraim Boys & Girls Club, Kingswood Community Center, Girls Inc. Kiwanis/YDC Branch, Girls Inc. Mary C Dennison Branch and Latin American Community Center.
