Last week we held a rally on the campus of Del Tech. This was a wonderful event for those of us cooped up in a campaign office to see the effects of our work. Just a few weeks prior to our rally we thought that we had nothing. No buttons, no T-shirts, no food, no drink, no balloons, no people, and definitely no idea how it was all going to work out. What we had was a room at Del Tech, a great candidate and some world-class volunteers. In that short space of time we created an event that any campaign in Delaware would be proud to have held in their honor. Our big empty space at Del Tech was transformed into a shrine of democratic activism. The room burst, with rally signs, banners, balloons, and pom-poms. Volunteers and supporters wore brand new T-shirts and sported our new buttons. There was more than enough food to go around, some even took a little home (though not me :-\ ). It was the culmination of a great deal of hard work, short of patting ourselves on the back here in the office it was an event for the volunteers. Without them stepping up and making this event it would have been Ted and I in that big empty room alone. Instead 300 volunteers came in and helped rock the house. Marla spoke to us about how "running for office is cheap, but winning is expensive!" Finance committeeman Mike Hare echoed that reminding us that "only printers and radio stations get rich during campaign season." Then we shifted into high gear as Pastor D (Derrick Johnson) came up and told us that if we only believe that it is possible, then it is, whipping the crowd up so much until it was Ted's turn to bring down the house. It blew me away to see so many people stepping up and declaring their support for Ted. Like I said its easy to lose sight of some things, but seeing and hearing our supporters I knew that our call to help build a stronger community will be answered by the voters of Delaware this Fall.
